A Chashaku ('teascoop') is a traditional Japanese tea utensil for measuring out a serving of powdered matcha. It can be carved from several materials, including beautiful and rare woods or even ivory. Most commonly you will find it in bamboo, delicately crafted to a smooth, gentle bend. Part of the wood may be darkened for artistic depth, such as with this one. Chashaku are appreciated for their beauty as well as their function, and special ones are bestowed with poetic names ('gomei') to give it a seasonal identity. In Japanese tea ceremony study, utensils are seasonal; some may make an appearance only once a year.
